About Butternut School District
Butternut School District maintains a deep history and tradition of excellence in the community. The first community school, started in 1878, was a log cabin, previously used as an ice house, with a single teacher and fourteen students.
The following year the first regulation school house was constructed, containing four classrooms, two libraries and a gymnasium. in 1900, additional rooms were built for kindergarten and eighth grade.
Schools were important to the community, and a more modern school was built in 1914 following a devastating fire the year before. It contained kindergarten through 12th grade in a single building, with eight rooms in the elementary and five rooms in the high school.
The current school, built as an add-on to the original 1914 school in the 1990s, houses students from pre-k through 12th grade, and includes a state of the art gym facility, a central commons area, a large library media center and multiple flexible learning spaces.
